A UNIQUE ANNUAL SONGWRITING AND ENTERPRISE AWARDS SCHEME AIMED AT ENCOURAGING AND UNCOVERING FRESH CREATIVE TALENT FROM YOUNG ARTISTS AND ENTREPRENEURS

The Make it Break it Awards is a unique award scheme for young songwriters to showcase and develop their music to get to the next step. The judging panel includes Chris Martin (Coldplay), Mark Radcliffe (Radio 2), The Wombats, Steve Levine (producer), Dawn Joseph (songwriter) and other industry officials.

The 2008 competition has evolved to give you more opportunities to develop you skills as a songwriter. The prize includes a "boot camp" academy at the famous Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. You will be working with professional musicians and get master classes from industry officials on how to excel in the music business.

Your school, rehearsal studios or youth club will also get £1000 worth of Yamaha equipment your choice of recording gear or instruments. You also get the opportunity to record a music video and demo in the creative environment with like minded musicians, ending the stay with a gig for press, industry and your friends and family in the fabulous Paul McCartney Auditorium at LIPA.

The judges

Chris Martin

was a winner of a Yamaha-devised songwritting competition in the 90's and since then has reached world renown in the band Coldplay.
The phenominal rise of Coldplay is a storry about four ambitious people who got together because they wanted to write great songs. Coldplay were hugly succssesfull almost immediately with their first album Parachutes bieng nominated for the Mecury Music Prize in 2000. Their second ulbum A Rush of Blood to the Head was even more popular with audiences and critics alike. It firmly established Chris, Will, Guy and Jonny as oen of the biggest bands in the world. Coldplay are due to release thier 4th album on the 16th June 08 called 'Viva la Vida'.

History

Make it, Break is a reincarnation of a competition held in the early 90s, spearheaded by Yahama and supported by The Times Educational Supplement and a national bank.

Terms and Conditions

Make it Break it terms and conditions

  1. Entries must be in by the 11th of July 2008.

  2. Entries must include:
  1. You must own the right for each song, recoding and promotional plan. The full entry should be your own original work without external help and assistance.

  2. The song might be a collaboration by two or more people, but all names need to be on the application form. The majority or main songwriter needs to be in the age category entered.

  3. The song should be less than 5 minutes long, with English lyrics and cannot be an instrumental.

  4. Winners will be notified by mail and must have ticked the declaration below to receive an award. Failure to sign and return the declaration or provision of false/inaccurate information, will result in immediate disqualification and an alternative winner will be selected.

  5. The division of prizes are solely the responsibility of the winners.

  6. If a band wins and break up before the showcase, the song will be disqualified unless the band can still work together or it is clear who the songwriter is.

  7. If you are under 18, the form needs to be countersigned by a parent or legal guardian.

  8. Entry constitutes permission to use winner’s names, likenesses, songs and voices for future advertising and publicity purposes without additional compensation.

  9. There will be three winners in each age group; 14-16 and 17-19 years.

  10. Winners will be required to perform two songs during the awards night and will be required to take part in the rehearsals, recording and sessions held at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts between the 6th and 9th of November. You will perform the winning entry and a second original song of your choice. You have the option to use the LIPA backing band.

  11. Winners will be required to attend the prize weekend to be able to claim prizes and the prize for their school, college or rehearsal studio.

  12. Previous winners may only re-enter if they have moved to the ext age group.

  13. By participation in the contest, entrants agree to be bound by these rules and any subsequent published revisions of these rules by the decisions of the organizers of “Make it Break it” which are final.

  14. The maximum entry is two songs which is one entry. The same band can enter twice, but only if the songs are written exclusively by different band members.

  15. The awards are available for UK residents only.
